baby, it's cold outside!
January 7th - tuesday
Welcome Back!
It is the New Year - a time for New Beginnings
and ReNewed Energy!
A new year is like a fresh, blank sheet of paper -
ready for you to start writing the story of your life!
Approach that blank sheet of paper with a positive attitude,
because - as the old saying goes,
"If you think you can or you think you can't, you're right!"
So make sure you think that you can - because - frankly - you can!

In the spirit of New Beginnings, we are going to do a little bit of housekeeping so that we can start our new year off in an organized way. And we are going to review the Keyboard and some Keyboard Shortcuts!
Here is a list of what we are going to get done today.
1- Make a tag for your flash drive - I will show you how to do this - very simple. We need a way to keep these organized for easy access and use. The flash drives will stay with me. For this task you need a wooden tag, a pipe cleaner and your flash drive. You also need a permanent marker and we will have to share these.
2 - All your log-ins and website URLs (A uniform resource locator, abbreviated URL also known as web address, particularly when used with HTTP) Right now would you please take out your tech notebook?
You need to take some notes!
Everyday you need to bring your tech notebook with you and - of course- something with which to write.
There are a number of URLs and log-ins that we need on a regular basis. I have a table for you to fill out. Be sure to fill it out neatly so that it can be read! I will keep these today - to grade them and to make a copy of them. That way, when you need a log-in from me I can (hopefully) access it quickly!

3- Investigate the QWERTY Keyboard! Did you know that they were called that? Do you know why they are called that? Do you know of any other type of keyboard designs?
A keyboard designed for speed typing. The Dvorak keyboard was designed in the 1930s by August Dvorak, a professor of education, and his brother-in-law, William Dealy. Unlike the traditional QWERTY keyboard, the Dvorak keyboard is designed so that the middle row of keys includes the most common letters. In addition, common letter combinations are positioned in such a way that they can be typed quickly.
It has been estimated that in an average eight-hour day, a typist's hands travel 16 miles on a QWERTY keyboard, but only 1 mile on a Dvorak keyboard.

I think my kids might like this just for the colors. However, this keyboard from KeyRight isn’t colorful “just because.” The colors tell you what keys your different fingers should hit for the most optimal typing experience and supposedly are 192% more effective than without the colors.
An ergonomic keyboard is a computer keyboard designed with ergonomic considerations to minimize muscle strain and a host of related problems.[1] Typically such keyboards for two-handed typists are constructed in a V shape, to allow right and left hands to type at a slight angle more natural to the human form.
We have some keyboards here. Let's have a look!
What are the F1 through F12 keys?Commonly known as function keys, F1 through F12 may have a variety of different uses or no use at all. Depending on the installed operating system and the software program currently open will change how each of these keys operate. A program is capable of not only using each of the function keys, but also combining the function keys with the ALT or CTRL key, for example, Microsoft Windows users can press ALT + F4 to close the program currently active.

character keys
Character keys are the keys that, when pressed, result in a character being typed. Consisting mostly of letters and number, there are also a variety of punctuation marks.
locking keys
Pressing some keys results in the locking of that key - to "unlock" you simply press that key again. NumLock, CapsLock and Scroll Lock are examples of Locking Keys.
Togglekeys
Initially designed for people with visual impairments, when ToggleKeys is turned on, your computer will provide sound cues when the locking keys (CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK, or SCROLL LOCK) are pressed. A high sound plays when the keys are switched on and a low sound plays when they are switched off.
Hold the NumLock key down for 5 seconds will activate ToggleKeys.

Insert key - Sometimes displayed as INS on the keyboard, the Insert key is a keyboard key located on the majority of all computers that allows text to be inserted. When insert is enabled, the text inserted in a document will not overwrite any other text. However, when disabled, text will be overwritten.

We are going to do some keyboarding assessments.
There are several typing URLs that I have listed here and I want you to try them all.
You will have a checklist that I want you to fill in after completing an exercise at each website. So, what you will do is: read the directions, click on the link, do the assessment and then fill in your checklist with the information requested.

Get the checklist/scoresheet from shares
Make sure that you fill out the CHECKLIST as you do these exercises. SAVE your filled out checklist in the KEYBOARDING folder as "yourlastname-wpm" - so, for example mine would be saved as campbell-wpm. Make sure you put it in the right place - which is the folder in the shares drive called Keyboarding.
